A request on state question # 742
Among the many state questions on the November 4th ballot will
be one that I would like to ask for your support of. Known as the “Hunting
Heritage Question” by some it is important to understand that
hunting and fishing is part of Oklahoma’s
heritage. This state question is intended to allow Oklahomans to more firmly
secure that right. It states in part “all citizens of this state shall have a
right to hunt, fish, trap and harvest game and fish, subject only to reasonable
regulation as prescribed by the legislature and the Oklahoma Wildlife
Conservation Commission.”
It also calls for “hunting, fishing and
trapping shall be the preferred means of managing game and fish that are not
identified as threatened by law or by the commission. Nothing shall be construed
to modify any provision of common law statutes relating to trespass, eminent
domain or any other property rights.”
Here is how the actual question will read
on your ballot.
STATE QUESTION NO. 742
LEGISLATIVE REFERENDUM NO. 345
This measure adds a new section to the State Constitution. It adds Section 36 to
Article 2. It gives all people of this state the right to hunt, trap, fish and
take game and fish. Such activities would be subject to reasonable regulation.
It allows the Wildlife Conservation Commission to approve methods and procedures
for hunting, trapping, fishing and taking of game and fish. It allows for taking
game and fish by traditional means. It makes hunting, fishing, and trapping the
preferred means to manage certain game and fish. The new law will not affect
existing laws relating to property rights.
Please vote “YES”
It is not too far of a reach to state that our rights are being trampled at ever
corner by groups and political parties who have no real concept of the shooting
sports as we know it. The animal rights groups with their almost
terrorists mentality are working to see this question fail. For that
reason alone we should vote for it. But in the end it is essential to have
us reaffirm our position and this question will do that. Rest assured we
have more battles to come but I am hoping that this will put one area behind us
so we can focus on the next one.
Thank you
