US Supreme Court! |
Dear Fellow Shooters:
Yesterday
the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments on the Washington DC vs. Heller
Case. This case deals with whether or not Washington, D.C.'s bans [on handguns, on having guns in
operable condition in the home and on carrying guns within the home] violate
the Second Amendment rights of individuals who are not affiliated with any
state-regulated militia, but who wish to keep handguns and other firearms
for private use in their homes. I thought you might enjoy reading the
court transcript. The Justices aggressively questioned advocates for all
sides, including Walter Dellinger for the District, Solicitor General Paul
Clement for the Department of Justice, and Alan Gura for the plaintiffs
challenging D.C.'s law. I followed the comments of several in attendance at
the hearing. The over all impression was that it went very well but it
would be foolish to assume anything at this time. Alan Gura was the man who
spoke on behalf of gun owners. He is a young man with an articulate voice
and manner that seemed to impress the judges. The decision will be handed
down in June. Here is the link to the transcript.
